Choosing a business name that customers remember

A name is often the first thing a customer learns about your business. A good one is easy to remember and tell a friend about. A poor one gets misspelt, confused with a competitor, or holds you back when you want to grow. Here is a practical way to choose.

What makes a good business name

Easy to say and spell

If people cannot spell it, they cannot search for it or save your number correctly. Say it out loud to five people and ask them to write it down. If most get it wrong, think again.

Short

Two or three words at most. Long names get shortened by customers anyway, often in ways you do not like.

Gives a hint of what you do, or a feeling

“Ama’s Kitchen” tells you it is food. Other names build a feeling, like reliability or warmth. Either works, as long as it fits your customers.

Leaves room to grow

“Kumasi Phone Repairs” is clear today, but limiting if you later open in Accra or start selling laptops. Think about where you could be in five years.

Not too close to someone else

A name that sounds like an existing business confuses customers and can cause legal trouble.

A simple process

  1. Brainstorm 20 names. Use words about your product, your values, your area, your family name or local languages.
  2. Cut to five. Remove anything hard to say, too long or too similar to a competitor.
  3. Test them. Ask a few customers or friends which they remember the next day.
  4. Check availability. Search Google, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for the name. Check if a matching website address is free.
  5. Check with the Registrar. Before you print anything, confirm the name is available with the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) when you register.

Register it

In Ghana, business names and companies are registered with the Office of the Registrar of Companies. Registering protects your name, helps you open a business bank account and makes you look more established to customers and suppliers. Fees change from time to time, so check the current ORC fee schedule. If you are unsure which structure to choose, read sole proprietorship or limited company.

Then use it everywhere, the same way

Once you have chosen, write it the same way on your sign, WhatsApp Business profile, social media pages, receipts and delivery bags. Consistency is what makes a name stick. A name is the start of your brand, and our article your brand is a promise explains what comes next.
